Academy appoints new Chair of Trustees – Press notice

28 February 12:00

The Board which oversees the governance and corporate activities of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has appointed Professor Andrew Eder as Chair of Trustees, to succeed Charles Winstanley who has completed the maximum permitted two terms, a total of six years in the role. Andrew, who is Emeritus Professor and Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and formerly Pro-Vice-Provost at University College London, brings a wealth of experience and specialist knowledge, particularly in the areas of strategic leadership and change management.

Andrew intends to focus on ensuring continued good governance and management of the Academy as it supports its members, ensuring they can influence health and care policy across the UK.

Commenting on the appointment, Professor Dame Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Academy’s Council said, ‘I am delighted Andrew has been able to join us especially at such a critical time as we emerge from the pandemic and consolidate the strengthened relationships and activities that have developed over the last two years in particular. However, I am also sad to see Charles go. He has been a great support to me and has been instrumental in helping the Academy grow over the last six years, but he’s off to a very well-earned retirement and we all wish him well.’

Charles Winstanley said, ‘I am grateful to all my fellow Trustees and of course the staff at the Academy for making the work so enjoyable. I think we have come a long way both in terms of developing the standing of the Academy and the medical royal colleges and getting the right systems and structures of governance in place to support that growth. I know I am handing over to a very capable pair of hands. Andrew’s tremendous skill set means he’s well suited to this role.’

Professor Eder said, ‘It’s a real privilege to be appointed to lead the Trustee Board. With the shifting political landscape there will undoubtedly be challenges ahead, but I am confident the Academy and its members are well-placed to continue to be the voice of doctors on all professional matters. The role of the Academy is to make sure that voice is heard and we, as Trustees, will ensure the Academy continues to be well run so that the Council can do its job effectively.’
