Independent Review of gross negligence manslaughter and culpable homicide

The Academy welcomes the publication of Leslie Hamiltons’s independent  review of gross negligence manslaughter and culpable homicide in medical practice for the GMC.

Professor Carrie MacEwen, Chair of the Academy said,

“The review covers the full range of issues that arose out of the death of Jack Adcock and the prosecution and conviction of Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba for gross negligence manslaughter and has sensible and important recommendations.

The Academy has recently produced guidance for health professionals acting as expert witnesses following Sir Norman Williams review of gross negligence manslaughter in healthcare. It is good to see the full alignment of recommendations on expert witness between the Hamilton review and our guidance.

We are pleased to see that the GMC has accepted all the recommendations within its remit and we hope the other bodies will take forward those recommendations relating to them.

The Academy and Colleges will be very willing to play their part in taking all the recommendations forward.”
