Academy statement: Myanmar

At its meeting in February 2021 the Academy Council, which comprises the presidents of all the medical royal colleges in the UK, expressed its concern at the evolving situation in Myanmar.

We urge the junta to respect all international humanitarian norms and laws relating to the rights of individuals including promotion of medical services and public health and protection of health workers and facilities from violence, interference and harm.

UK medical royal colleges have strong links with colleagues and organisations in Myanmar. These partnerships are of strong mutual benefit and contribute to improving health outcomes in Myanmar.  Returning to a position of isolation would  endanger this work to the detriment of people in Myanmar and the UK.
