This page lists the resources offered by medical royal colleges and faculties which support doctors with low to high level remediation needs.

*Please note the resources described here are offered to doctors who are no longer trainees – resources for trainees may be different.
All medical royal colleges and faculties provide the following services:

  • Supporting information for appraisal and revalidation
  • Revalidation Helpdesks set up to answer questions from Responsible Officers, Doctors and Appraisers
  • CPD resources and support.

In addition to this the medical royal colleges and faculties listed below also offer other services. These are grouped under the following headings:

Mentoring

No specific mentoring scheme but informal peer coaching offered for new consultants.

CPD

Direct College support for CPD activity & provision of resources, such as e-Learning for Anaesthesia

Leadership and management development courses  interactive – and allow specific time for one to one discussions where requested. They include sessions on personal effectiveness, team-working and dealing with challenging professional relationships.

Several Deaneries offer support for new consultants in the first year of appointment and work with the College where the support requirement is specialty-specific

CPD

There is a programme of CPD study days and conferences designed to support generic or specific aspects of skills and knowledge needed by new consultants and career grades.

The Revalidation Guide for Emergency Medicine brings together key information regarding current revalidation requirements and processes in all four countries of the United Kingdom.

Mentoring

RCGP First5 is a membership package for newly qualified GPs offering peer support, networking, mentoring and support in revalidation and CPD in the five years following attainment of CCT.

CPD

RCGP educational resources are hosted in the RCGP Learning section of the RCGP website, which includes the GP SelfTest online learning needs assessment tool, as well as a number of other resources such as e-learning, courses and events, accredited courses and publications.

These resources may also be utilised by other organisations providing remedial support, including Local Education Training Boards/Deaneries and Local Medical Committees.

Guidance

The RCGP also provides a GP wellbeing help and support page which signposts to a range of internal and external sources of support for doctors experiencing difficulty.

Mentoring

The RCOG is currently developing a package of resources for newly appointed consultants and an online buddying service for members, including a Peer2Peer online resource enabling obstetricians and gynaecologists to connect with another RCOG member to aid their professional development. This service is designed to support members at all career stages.
The College published Becoming Tomorrow’s Specialist in 2014 which includes details of buddying/coaching.

CPD

An annual “New consultant” meeting and regular Clinical Directors meetings have included discussions on how to support new doctors. Details of which can be found on the College’s events webpage.

Mentoring

Mentoring support programme provides:

  • Access to RCPCH mentoring standards, definitions and FAQs
  • Endorsement process for existing local mentoring schemes
  • Mentoring Champions network to embed mentoring practice in local organisations
  • Mentoring Skills training to develop mentors within the profession

Support is available to all paediatricians including trainees, new and experienced consultants and SAS doctors.

Mentoring, Revalidation and CPD

Trainees

We run a mentoring scheme for trainees, have active regional advisors who can help support HEE & deanery visits to review training posts and on occasions have provided more focussed training site reviews. Individual trainees with difficulties should be supported by HEE & deanery run support units.

Consultants

We provide a revalidation portfolio for members and fellows, have a CPD advisor to support recognition of courses, have a careers officer and proactively support mentoring for new consultants. Our annual census allows comparison of job plans and workloads across the UK and our invited service review team (see below) can help support trusts where concerns are raised. Regional advisors may also be able to give advice on a case-by-case basis.

The College expects all newly appointed Consultant Physicians to have a mentor appointed at the time of Advisory Appointment Committee.

There is a careers officer.

There are a range of non-clinical CPD educational programmes currently provided by the Education Department of the College to meet a number of the needs of new consultants e.g. leadership courses, mentoring and appraisal for revalidation.

Mentoring

The College runs a Mentorship Programme which is a free membership benefit, matching members who are seeking mentoring as their careers develop, perhaps when changing roles, with established, trained College mentors.

There is a mentoring and coaching scheme, led by Dr Pierre Taub.
This was developed in 2014 aimed at providing support and guidance to Psychiatrists at all stages of their career.

StartWell

The StartWell programme was initiated in 2014 and is a consultant-led programme aimed at psychiatrists in their first five years as a consultant or locum consultant. StartΨell focusses on six elements to support psychiatrists in their first consultant role with the intention to establish good habits for their careers.

Psychiatry Support Service

The Psychiatrists’ Support Service is a free, confidential support and advice service for members, trainee members and associates of the Royal College of Psychiatrists who find themselves in difficulty or in need of support. If appropriate, you will be put in touch with another psychiatrist who will be able to talk through the issues with you and offer support or signpost you to appropriate services.

Mentoring

Several officers and members of the Faculty have received training in coaching and mentoring. If the Faculty is approached a mentor will be assigned based on the individual’s geographic location and development needs. This seems to have worked well to date, there is no ongoing work stream in this regard at present as the demand is not high.

SRH doctors should have regular peer supervision.

Guidance and further training

The College has clear advice on the support that it can offer to surgeons who require further training and remediation.
At its discretion, the College may provide the following services:

  • A professional opinion on the feasibility and practicality of a proposed further training programme.
  • Advice on clinical content of further training e.g. duration, methods of assessment, key learning objectives
  • Assistance with the identification of further training placements.
  • Provision of specialist advice to the Trust through participation in a panel to oversee the programme.
  • Advice and support for the surgeon undergoing further training through Confidential Support and Advice Services.

Curricula and assessment tools are also available through the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme.

Support Service

Confidential advice and support service for surgeons to discuss issues of concern/confidentiality with a colleague or peer.
