Several Deaneries offer support for new consultants in the first year of appointment and work with the College where the support requirement is specialty-specific
There is a programme of CPD study days and conferences designed to support generic or specific aspects of skills and knowledge needed by new consultants and career grades.
The Revalidation Guide for Emergency Medicine brings together key information regarding current revalidation requirements and processes in all four countries of the United Kingdom.
RCGP First5 is a membership package for newly qualified GPs offering peer support, networking, mentoring and support in revalidation and CPD in the five years following attainment of CCT.
RCGP educational resources are hosted in the RCGP Learning section of the RCGP website, which includes the Personal Education Planning (PEP) online learning needs assessment tool, as well as a number of other resources such as e-learning, courses and events, accredited courses and publications.
These resources may also be utilised by other organisations providing remedial support, including Local Education Training Boards/Deaneries and Local Medical Committees.
The RCGP also provides a GP wellbeing help and support page which signposts to a range of internal and external sources of support for doctors experiencing difficulty.
The RCOG is currently developing a package of resources for newly appointed consultants and an online buddying service for members, including a Peer2Peer online resource enabling obstetricians and gynaecologists to connect with another RCOG member to aid their professional development. This service is designed to support members at all career stages.
The College published Becoming Tomorrow’s Specialist in 2014 which includes details of buddying/coaching.
An annual “New consultant” meeting and regular Clinical Directors meetings have included discussions on how to support new doctors. Details of which can be found on the College’s events webpage.

We run a mentoring scheme for trainees, have active regional advisors who can help support HEE & deanery visits to review training posts and on occasions have provided more focussed training site reviews. Individual trainees with difficulties should be supported by HEE & deanery run support units.
We provide a revalidation portfolio for members and fellows, have a CPD advisor to support recognition of courses, have a careers officer and proactively support mentoring for new consultants. Our annual census allows comparison of job plans and workloads across the UK and our invited service review team (see below) can help support trusts where concerns are raised. Regional advisors may also be able to give advice on a case-by-case basis.
The College expects all newly appointed Consultant Physicians to have a mentor appointed at the time of Advisory Appointment Committee.
There is a careers officer.
There are a range of non-clinical CPD educational programmes currently provided by the Education Department of the College to meet a number of the needs of new consultants e.g. leadership courses, mentoring and appraisal for revalidation.
E-learning for appraisees and a workshop on appraisal and revalidation
The College runs a Mentorship Programme which is a free membership benefit, matching members who are seeking mentoring as their careers develop, perhaps when changing roles, with established, trained College mentors.
There is a mentoring and coaching scheme, led by Dr Pierre Taub.
This was developed in 2014 aimed at providing support and guidance to Psychiatrists at all stages of their career.
The StartWell programme was initiated in 2014 and is a consultant-led programme aimed at psychiatrists in their first five years as a consultant or locum consultant. StartΨell focusses on six elements to support psychiatrists in their first consultant role with the intention to establish good habits for their careers.
The Psychiatrists’ Support Service is a free, confidential support and advice service for members, trainee members and associates of the Royal College of Psychiatrists who find themselves in difficulty or in need of support. If appropriate, you will be put in touch with another psychiatrist who will be able to talk through the issues with you and offer support or signpost you to appropriate services.

Several officers and members of the Faculty have received training in coaching and mentoring. If the Faculty is approached a mentor will be assigned based on the individual’s geographic location and development needs. This seems to have worked well to date, there is no ongoing work stream in this regard at present as the demand is not high.
SRH doctors should have regular peer supervision.
