Academy statement: The Leng Review 

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges warmly welcomes Professor Gillian Leng’s independent review of Physician Associates and Anaesthesia Associates. Her meticulous approach to gathering and assessing the evidence of their safety and effectiveness is to be applauded. Professor Leng’s recommendations, which are based on those findings, now provide us all with an opportunity to reset the relationship between this group of healthcare professionals and other NHS staff, including doctors. Clearly there is work to be done – but what we have now is the basis for a positive future which will ensure safe, multiprofessional working to a uniform standard across the NHS.
