Walter Merricks, the first chair of the Academy Board of Trustees steps down today at the end of his five year term of office. He is being replaced as Chair of the Board by Charles Winstanley who was appointed following open competition in January.

Chair of the Academy Council Professor Dame Sue Bailey said:

” I want to thank Walter for all his work for the Academy and for the help and support he has provided as the Chair of Board of Trustees. I have appreciated his thoughtful advice and know my predecessors as Academy Council Chair, Professor Terrence Stephenson and Professor Sir Neil Douglas feel the same.
Walter was the first independently appointed Chair of the Trustees and has shown the value of governance arrangements separating the roles of the Board in looking after the Academy itself as an organisation leaving the Council of College Presidents to concentrate on medical and healthcare policy matters.
I wish Walter all the best for the future.

Walter Merricks said:

” I have hugely enjoyed my time as the first Chair of the Academy Board of Trustees and taken real pleasure in seeing the Academy grow in strength and reputation.
I wish my successor Charles Winstanley, the Board, Council and Academy staff all the best going forward.”
