Since 2012 the Academy has been looking at remediation and how the medical Royal Colleges can provide assessment and specialist input into remediation programmes.

Currently we are focusing on ways to assist Responsible Officers (ROs) so that they have the right resources to direct doctors in need of assistance to the appropriate help. Potential roles for Colleges include:

  • Signposting. We are continuing to develop resources to help and advise ROs on professional standards and expectations in the specialties, and are updating a collation of resources to be shared with the RO Network, and the National Clinical Assessment Service
  • Peer coaching/mentoring for doctors facing difficulties
  • Offering tailored support and advice to doctors within individual specialties where a problem has been identified by an RO or Trust, and specialty specific support and re-skilling is required.

This work is being carried out by the Remediation working group. Chaired by Dr Andrew Long and managed by Yvonne Livesey.
