The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, representing doctors across the UK, deplores all attacks on healthcare facilities, staff and patients in conflict zones.
The Academy believes that the unfettered impartial practice of medicine is a fundamental principle which should be defended.
The Academy therefore:
- Recognises and supports the work of Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders – UK and other agencies to support health professionals in conflict zones
- Urges full implementation of the UN Resolution 2286 agreed a year ago which affirms and strengthens the protection of the medical mission in times of armed conflict
- Urges the UK Government to take the lead in affirming international mechanisms which protect health care services and medical ethics in times of war.
