Obesity Steering Group

Chaired by: Professor Terence Stephenson

The Academy Obesity Steering Group has been established to carry out a project on tackling obesity on behalf of the medical Royal Colleges and Faculties.

Its main responsibilities are to:

  • Produce a strategy on the most effective and coherent way to tackle obesity
  • Produce a recommendation report to form part of a wider Obesity campaign in the first quarter of 2013.

The Steering Group membership consists of:

  • Royal Colleges and Faculties
  • Member of the Academy Intercollegiate Group on Nutrition.

The Obesity Steering Group called for written evidence in May and June 2012 from those with expertise in the area of obesity. In June the group listened to additional oral evidence from selected respondents to further support the written evidence received.  The steering group gathered further evidence, asking specifically for patient and public opinion, particularly from those with experience with obesity and weight management.

The Obesity Steering Group published a report of its findings in February 2013. With a parliamentary launch to take place on 25 February 2013.
